Troy began working in technology as a database designer at the University of Michigan in 1990. He went on to work in creative, production, and technology capacities at some of the world's leading agencies, including Young & Rubicam, Ammirati Puris Lintas, DraftWorldwide, and OgilvyOne, where he gained deep experience in the automotive, pharmaceutical, electronics, telecommunications, travel, financial services, and luxury goods categories. From 2000–2002, he ran the interactive unit of Veritas Group, where his clients included Mercedes-Benz USA, Toshiba, and Hunter Douglas. In 2002, he left Veritas to found MetaFoundry.
Troy began his working career as a stage director and producer in New York. In nearly a decade, he directed or produced more than 60 plays and live events. He also served as Managing Director of Malaparte, where he produced new plays with Artistic Director Ethan Hawke. He remains active in the entertainment industry, serving on the boards of directors for Soho Repertory Theatre and the Vail Film Festival. A native Michigander, he holds a B.A. in history from the University of Michigan, and remains a devoted fan of Sleeping Bear Dunes, the Detroit Tigers, The Lake Effect, and the Nick Adams stories. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Katherine Pew, a writer and yoga instructor, and their children, Everett and Greta.
